Australia’s National Broadband Company (NBN Co) has welcomed the federal government’s announcement as part of the its Budget 2026-27 to update the Telecommunications Act 1997 and the National Broadband Network Companies Act 2011.
“We support legislative changes that will improve the rollout of fibre and new telecommunications infrastructure,” NBN Co said.
As part of the Labor government’s A$263.8 billion budget, amendments to the two legislative items will include reforms aimed at speeding up approvals for mobile towers and fiber networks, as well as funding for cyber security and emergency messaging systems.
Specifically, the government will aim to enable faster and more predictable approval processes to encourage private investment and
support the uptake of new technologies.
It will do so by making it easier to seek environmental approvals, upgrade telecommunications infrastructure and attract foreign investment. “The
government is also helping speed up work on new projects,” it said.
The net direct regulatory burden will reduce by up to A$16 million each year, according to the Budget statement.
The government has also flagged the removal of redundant telco facilities and improving National Broadband Network services in multi-dwelling and commercial buildings. “This will support further investment in digital connectivity,” it added
“We look forward to working with the Australian Government on these important amendments to the Telecommunications Act and National Broadband Network Companies Act,” said NBN Co.
