Singtel-owned telco Optus has expanded its Daily Roaming service, enabling customers on eligible plans to stay connected in-flight on selected airlines from $5 a day.
In collaboration with UK-based mobile network operator for the aviation sector AeroMobile, the offering provides an in-flight roaming service on 19 major airlines, including Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines and Etihad Airways.
For customers on Choice Plus plans, Optus Daily Roaming provides 5GB of data for $5, usable in-flight on selected airlines and in over 110 destinations worldwide within 24 hours.
“Customers with eligible Optus plans can text, email and browse from 20,000 feet with ease, making it a cost-effective alternative to airline Wi-Fi packages,” said Optus.
According to new Optus data, Australians are continuing to prioritise travel, with the top 10 international destinations for 1.4 million Optus customers in 20244 including: Singapore, UK, Indonesia, China, US, Thailand.
Optus Vice President of Mobile & Home Renee Garner said: “We understand that our customers’ desire to stay connected doesn’t stop when they board a flight. With our expanded in-flight roaming as part of the $5 Daily Roaming pack, we’re making it more affordable and accessible.”
The technology behind this service uses satellite connectivity to link customers’ devices to AeroMobile’s network.
Customers using Optus Daily Roaming in-flight with an AeroMobile enabled airline can continue using any remaining inclusions for the rest of the day when they land in a Zone 1 destination within 24 hours of activating roaming – without the hassle of switching SIM cards.
